Hanwha Phasor Logo

Interoperable, ultra-low profile, high-gain satcom on the move

Senior RF Antenna Design Engineer

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior RF Antenna Design Engineer to complement the existing design team. As a member of the Antenna Design Team, the ideal candidate will be responsible for the design, development, simulation and evaluation of Ku-Band and Ka-Band transmit and receive flat panel, electronically scanned phased array Antenna Boards.

The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic London-based technology company developing and delivering complex and innovative products into the aerospace, maritime and land mobile industries.

Look up and lock on to a bigger future, fast

As the original disruptors in solid-state satcom-on-the-move antenna, Hanwha Phasor is rewriting the book on phased arrays. It’s one of the toughest challenges in satcom. And, so far, we are the only team to demo multi-axis capability in real world conditions.

Now we’re closing in our goal: active electronically-steered antennas (AESA) for super-fast, super-reliable connectivity—GEO, of course, but LEO, MEO and HEO too.

Our inventive combination of digital and analogue architectures enables highest performance gain for lowest power and lowest profile, while our modular approach enables configurable apertures for the full range of enterprise customers on the move – in the air, on land or at sea.

Backed by Hanwha Systems, the Korean technology giant with a growing presence in global satcom, we are attracting formidable partners: we have appointed a world-class, global manufacturing partner, and two of the world’s best FABs are working on our chips.

So, what does that mean for you? All the fast-paced opportunity you’d expect from a challenger, plus the systems, processes and investment you’d want from an established industry leader.

Technical responsibilities

  • To work within the Antenna Design group to specify, design, simulate and implement custom Ku-Band/Ka-Band transmit and receive RF Antenna boards that form an integral part of Hanwha’s product development roadmap
  • To perform RF EM simulations using the latest techniques in HFSS and ADS to ensure the designs meets the specifications.
  • Work closely with the ASIC, Hardware, Mechanical, Software and System teams to ensure effective support of the development programme, by assisting with the integration and evaluation of these designs into high-density, multi-layer PCB Layouts and antenna modules
  • Maintaining accurate documentation on design specifications, development processes, test procedures and test results and contributing to weekly status reports
  • Supporting the hardware team with the design of RF structures such as baluns, rat-races, printed circuit board filters and matching networks and helping to characterise the performance of the assembled RF board assemblies
  • The role may involve occasional travel to our open area far field range to assist the System Test team in evaluating the Antenna performance at a product level

Organisational responsibilities

  • Strongly self-motivated and able to take ownership of problems and finding solutions
  • Good communication skills, team working and ability to take ownership of varied project activities
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver on-time and build good working relationships with cross-functional team members and external departments, acting as a technical lead when required
  • Able to adapt to a fast-moving environment
  • Creative with good problem-solving abilities

Essential qualifications and skills

  • A good first degree (BEng/MEng) in Electronic/Electrical Engineering, Physics or related subject, preferably specialising in antennas and EM propagation
  • At least three to five years’ experience of RF and antenna design and measurement and +3 years industry experience in a development role
  • Proven experience in antenna design and product development covering a range of microwave frequencies. Experience with the characteristics and design of various antenna types
  • Solid understanding of antenna theory, phased array principles, and electronically steerable arrays. Ability to capture requirements and distil them into a written specification
  • Able to demonstrate a solid understanding of RF Antenna Design and modelling using HFSS and ADS
  • Competency to perform post-processing of data using tools such as MATLAB
  • Good knowledge of transmission line theory and impedance matching circuits
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills being able to communicate with all levels effectively; able to challenge, negotiate and influence to achieve a desired goal/outcome

Desirable

  • A good understanding of the complete product development process preferably for aerospace products is desirable
  • Practical experience of Antenna testing on near and far field ranges
  • Competent practical experience in the use of RF test equipment such as VNAs/PNAs, spectrum analysers, signal generators, power meters, anechoic chamber
  • Experience of testing and troubleshooting of RF systems above 6GHz
  • The ability to analyse the trade‐offs between performance, manufacturability, cost and user experience
