Principal Hardware Engineer (R2)

We have a rare opportunity for an experienced Senior/Lead Hardware Engineer with a background in communications and/or SatCom Engineering to complement the existing design team to play a significant part in the development of a novel phased array antenna system. This will include supporting designs for current projects and participating in feasibility studies for the next-generation of Antenna Boards to de-risk future product designs. The candidate will be part of a dynamic London-based technology company developing complex and innovative products into the aerospace, maritime and land mobile industries.
Your role will be required to take ownership and lead the hardware aspect in developing the next generation of Ku/Ka Antenna Products and RFIC/Antenna Test Board designs (at a Hardware and PCB Level), including contributing to the wider system architecture. You will be a part of a multidisciplinary team working with ASIC, Antenna, Mechanical, Manufacturing and Product Engineers across a range of technologies to deliver complex product PCBs ranging from Ku/Ka-Band multi-gigahertz RF Antenna Boards, RFIC evaluation boards to mixed signal processor and Analogue control boards.

Technical responsibilities

  • As a member of the hardware development team, your role will be to design, verify, commission and productise board-level hardware designs for Hanwha’s Phased Array Antenna products.
  • To take complete ownership of hardware designs from requirements capture, feasibility studies, design and test specifications, schematic entry though to PCB layout, fabrication, commissioning, and lab verification testing through to managing systems integration into platforms.
  • Collaborate with the other members of the hardware, ASIC, software, systems and mechanical teams to ensure effective support of existing and future development programmes.
  • Perform design calculations, power estimates and carry out SI simulations using industry standard tools in order to estimate performance, mitigate high-risk areas and ensure reliable designs.
  • Support product design, software integration, validation and handover to production with other Engineering team members.
  • Ensure the products are designed for EMC, Environmental and other regulatory approvals and meet the requirements for volume manufacturing (DFT/DFM).

  • Contribute to the company’s long-term goals by delivering right first-time hardware designs.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver on-time and build good working relationships with cross-functional team members and external departments, acting as a technical lead when required.
  • Taking the lead in generating hardware specifications and design documentation.
  • Take responsibility for own projects and delivery to tight timescales, communicating through plans, presentations and written reports.
  • Provide time and effort required for hardware activities for input into the project planning process.
  • Contribute to hardware design reviews when appropriate to ensure quality designs.
  • Strongly self-motivated and able to take ownership of problems and finding solutions. Excellent communication skills and team working. Flexible can-do attitude.

Essential qualifications and skills

  • A good first or upper 2nd Class degree (BEng/MEng) in Electronic/Electrical Engineering from a leading University.
  • Around 10 – 15 years’ experience in a relevant industry working on leading-edge embedded product developments in the data communications, automotive or aerospace industry.
  • Strong background in high frequency RF (multi-gigahertz), Analogue, digital and mixed signal circuit design from concept, specification through to systems integration, test and manufacture.
  • Significant product design experience in the design and layout of complex, mixed signal multi-layer PCB designs and the management of associated debug and integration issues.
  • Experienced in the layout of high-speed multi-layer PCBs including micro-via technology, stackup constraints and controlled impedance traces. Solid knowledge of high-speed design techniques. Appreciation of low-voltage high current, power distribution techniques on multi-layer, mixed-signal PCB Layouts.
  • Highly competent with schematic capture tools such as Altium Designer (essential) and industry standard tools for SI simulations (ADS, HyperLynx, Ansys HFSS).
  • Ability to liaise with and project manage PCB layout engineers, fabricators and assembly houses.
  • Design for Excellence – DFM/DFT for volume manufacture. JTAG boundary scan development.
  • Competent practical experience in the use of test equipment such as scopes, logic analysers, spectrum analysers, signal generators, power meters.
  • Creative with good problem-solving abilities. Able to adapt to a fast-moving environment.


Experience in:

  • A good understanding of the complete product development process preferably for high-reliability environments, namely aerospace, defence or marine products.
  • Knowledge of the product approvals process to meet CE, EN and the relevant product approvals (emissions, susceptibility, environmental) for the Aero (DO-160G) and marine markets.
  • The ability to analyse the trade‐offs between performance, manufacturability and cost.
  • Good practical skills in electronics, soldering and mechanical assembly skills.
