Principal Mechanical Engineer

We’re looking for an experienced Principal Mechanical Engineer to take a key role within the mechanical engineering team and to lead the mechanical design & development activities in the product development of a novel phased array antenna system for an aerospace application.

Technical responsibilities

  • Excellent technical and analytical capabilities to convert analytic trade studies into a pragmatic concept(s) leading to viable products at both prototype and production scale levels.
  • Understand the customer and product requirements to identify and lead the project mechanical design trade-offs for solutions based on functional performance, optimisation and unit cost etc.
  • Responsible for the project mechanical architecture and definition of mechanical requirements, specifications, procedures and processes at both system and sub-system levels in accordance with functional and industry standards.
  • Create, define, and monitor the project mechanical design work packages (internal and external) and direct other mechanical engineers within the project.
  • Ownership of the product mechanical hardware design for thermal, structural, and aerothermal performance with support and mentoring of other project team members.
  • Perform and/or lead subcontracted analysis of structural and thermal management solutions for product verification.
    • Support and mentor others in the team with design analysis methodology and peer review
  • Support customer engineering liaison and customer deliverables, alerting the project team to possible risks and opportunities
  • Lead the project team to manufacture, assemble and integrate mechanical prototypes to capture lessons learnt and feed them back into designs.
  • Lead and define the project mechanical qualification and certification activities through the creation of verification test plans, procedures, fixtures and reports etc.
  • Produce concept and detailed designs, using 3D CAD (preferably Solidworks), that are fit for purpose and cost effective.
    • Peer review and approval of mechanical designs and interface definition from other team members.
  • Investigate & create engineering change notices to meet configuration control process requirements
    • Review and approve ECNs from others.
  • Support wider mechanical functional activities by way of mentoring and development of junior engineers, standard processes & procedures, lifecycle management, design development and new technology & methods.

Organisational responsibilities

  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical guidance in support of projects and build good working relationships with cross-functional team members and external vendors, acting as a project mechanical lead.
  • Work with the engineering teams across multiple disciplines to integrate technology requirements into the systems, software, electrical and RF design.
  • Accountability and ownership for assigned projects and delivery to tight timescales, communicating through plans, presentations, and written reports.
  • Review and approve mechanical project work from the team and report progress to mechanical functional lead and wider management team.
  • Manage and lead small engineering teams to deliver internal and external projects.
  • Manage suppliers to deliver sub-contracted work packages including detail design, analysis, testing, and manufacturing of products (in conjunction with the operations team).
  • Identify and implement continuous improvements of processes and tools associated with the product development lifecycle and engineering functions

Essential qualifications and skills

  • A good first or Upper 2nd Class degree (BEng/MEng) in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent work-based qualifications.
  • Minimum 10+ years leading the mechanical design of Aerospace hardware and/or complex electro-mechanical systems
  • Excellent communications skills and able to take responsibility for the mechanical delivery of projects through the entire project lifecycle
  • A broad understanding of mechanical engineering, including experience and ability to undertake and define thermal and structural analysis and trade studies.
  • Product development of RF communications electronics.
  • Experience of platform integration and design certification within Aerospace sector
  • Knowledge and experience of design lifecycle process and aerospace standards (eg. RTCA-DO-160. MIL-STD-810, ARINC 792, EASA).
  • Able to “get hands dirty”

Desirable

  • Experience of mechanical integration of equipment onto customer vehicles (Airborne, Marine and Land).
  • Experience of customer liaison and support of customer demonstrations/installations.
  • Experience of environmental test methods for design verification and certification to Airborne, Marine and Land standards.
