Senior PCB Layout Engineer

An experienced individual is required to join a rapidly expanding project team to take responsibility for in-house PCB design and layout activities for the company’s Phased Array Antenna products. This will include undertaking designs for current projects and feasibility studies to de-risk future product designs. The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic London-based technology company developing innovative, world class products into the aerospace, maritime and land mobile industries.

The Senior PCB Layout Engineer will be part of a multidisciplinary team working with Hardware, Mechanical, ASIC, Manufacturing and Product Engineers across a range of technologies to deliver complex product PCBs ranging from Ku/Ka-Band multi-gigahertz RF Antenna Boards, RFIC evaluation boards, power converters to mixed signal processor and Analogue control boards. This is an exciting opportunity to grow as an individual and develop leading edge technical skills across a broad range of technologies.

Technical Responsibilities: 

  • Take ownership of complete PCB CAD designs (Altium) from requirements capture, mechanical definition, layer stackups, symbol and footprint creation, assist with schematic entry, capturing design rules though to the design of complex mixed-signal (RF,   analogue, digital, RF) PCB layouts, data pack generation to deliver volume production quality, right-first time PCB Designs.
  • Work in collaboration with the other members of the development team, specifically Hardware, Mechanical, ASIC and Systems Engineers, Antenna Designers and NPI Manufacturing Engineers to ensure effective support of the existing development programmes.
  • Symbol and component creation, design checklists and Manufacturing Data Pack generation
  • Ensure the PCBs are designed for EMC, Environmental and other regulatory approvals in line with best practise and meet the requirements for volume manufacturing (DFT/DFM).
  • Pro-active approach, self-motivated with the ability to deliver quality products on time whilst ensuring DFX (Design for Excellence – DFT/DFM).
  • Administration of the Altium Concord Component and design Vault and associated user accounts. 

Organisational Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the company’s long-term goals by delivering right first-time PCB designs and driving process improvement programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver on-time and build good working relationships with cross-functional team members and external departments, acting as a technical lead when required. 
  • Contribute to hardware design reviews when appropriate to ensure PCB requirements are met.
  • Take responsibility for the PCB resource scheduling using in-house and external bureaus.
  • Provide time and effort required for layout activities for input into the project planning process.

Qualifications & Skills:

Essential:             

  • HNC, HND or higher in Electrical/ Electronic Engineering or related field.
  • At least 10 or more years’ experience in a relevant industry working on leading-edge PCB CAD designs for products in the data communications, automotive, aerospace or defence sectors. 
  • Experienced with one or more schematic/layout toolchains such as Altium Concord (Essential), Mentor, CAM350, GCPrevue. Knowledge of import/export for ECAD/MCAD collaboration.
  • A strong background in Altium Designer and Altium Concord Component Vault, lifecycle management, schematic and PCB templates, best practise obtained from industry experience.
  • Considerable PCB CAD design experience in applications including analogue, digital, power and high-frequency (multi-gigaherz) RF Antenna board layouts in one or more of the following fields: telecoms, aerospace, wireless, microwave for both commercial and/or defence equipment.
  • Experience of multi-layer PCB designs involving high-speed layout techniques, routing of controlled impedance traces, layout of mixed signal (Analogue, Digital, RF) and power circuits, power planes including construction of conventional and micro-via technology stackups.
  • Familiar with the placement and layout of PCBs involving SMT and through-hole components, passives, QFNs, QFPs, BGAs, SOICs, etc, thermal management and technologies such as MCUs, FPGAs, Ethernet Switches, Flash Memories, SRAMs, Ethernet PHYs, CAN and RF features.
  • Good understanding of the layout constraints for high current point of load power supplies (switch mode and linear), current return paths, grounding options and thermal management techniques.
  • Experienced with one or more schematic capture tools such as Altium, Mentor and HyperLynx for SI simulations. Knowledge of mechanical import/export process for ECAD design. 
  • A solid understanding of the PCB fabrication processes (conventional and sequential lamination), aware of the latest technologies, material selection, stack-ups, buried and blind vias etc.)
  • PCB design for EMC. DFM/DFT for volume manufacture. 
  • Ability to liaise with and manage PCB fabricators and assembly houses.
  • Excellent communication skills and team working. Self-starter. Flexible can-do attitude. 


Desirable:            

  • IPC CID Certified. An understanding of IPC standards.
  • A good understanding of the PCB development process for high-reliability environments, namely aerospace, marine or automotive products.
  • Knowledge of the product approvals process to meet CE, EN and the relevant product approvals (emissions, susceptibility, environmental) for the Aero (DO-160G) and marine markets.
  • Knowledge of flexi and flexi-rigid PCB designs.
  • Experience of Solidworks with respect to the import/export of mechanical information.
