Principal RF Antenna Design Engineer [HSE PAD 001]

  • Date Added: April 19th, 2021

We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal RF Antenna Design Engineer to complement the existing design team. As a member of the Antenna Design Team, the ideal candidate will be responsible for the design, development, simulation and evaluation of Ku-Band and Ka-Band transmit and receive flat panel, electronically scanned phased array Antenna Boards.

The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic London-based technology company developing and delivering complex and innovative products into the aerospace, maritime and land mobile industries.

Technical Responsibilities:

  • To take ownership of antenna designs from requirements definition, design development, implementation, validation and integration into Hanwha’s phased array antenna products
  • To work within the Antenna Design group to specify, design, simulate and implement custom Ku-Band/Ka-Band transmit and Receive RF Antenna boards that form an integral part of Hanwha’s product development roadmap
  • To perform RF EM simulations using the latest techniques in HFSS and ADS to ensure the designs meets the specifications
  • To assist with the integration and evaluation of these antenna designs into high-density, multi-layer PCB Layouts and Antenna Modules
  • To collaborate closely with the ASIC, Hardware, Software and System Test teams to ensure effective support of the wider development programmes
  • Maintaining accurate documentation on design specifications, development processes, test procedures and test results and contributing to weekly status reports
  • Supporting the hardware team with the design of RF structures such as baluns, rat-races, printed circuit board filters and matching networks and helping to characterise the performance of the assembled RF board assemblies
  • Provide technical leadership to the wider team and mentoring in areas of specialist expertise
  • The role may involve occasional travel to our open area far field range to assist the System Test team in evaluating the antenna performance at a product level

Organisational Responsibilities:

  • Able to work with lead engineering teams to integrate the system and technology requirements into the antenna design
  • Contribute to the product development and hardware planning process through the use of continuous improvement programmes and by providing time and effort estimates to project plans
  • Strongly self-motivated and able to take ownership of problems and finding solutions
  • Good communication skills, multi-disciplinary team working and ability to take ownership of varied project activities
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver on-time and build good working relationships with cross-functional team members and external departments, acting as a technical lead when required
  • Able to adapt to a fast-moving environment
  • Creative with good problem-solving abilities

  • At least five to eight years’ experience of RF and antenna design and measurement and +5 years industry experience in a development role
  • Proven experience in antenna design and product development covering a range of microwave frequencies. Experience with the characteristics and design of various antenna types
  • Solid understanding of antenna theory, phased array principles, and electronically steerable arrays. Ability to capture requirements and distil them into a written specification
  • Able to demonstrate a solid understanding of RF Antenna Design and modelling using tools such as HFSS and ADS; knowledge of HFSS Domain Decomposition Method a distinct advantage
  • Solid knowledge on EM theory and expertise with 2D/3D EM simulation tools such as HFSS, ADS; experience of using these tools in a Cloud based Computing Cluster would be an advantage
  • Competency to perform post-processing of data using tools such as MATLAB or Mathcad
  • Good knowledge of transmission line theory and impedance matching circuits
  • Hands-on experience performing S-parameter measurements using PNAs and antenna pattern measurements, using anechoic chambers in development lab environments
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills being able to communicate with all levels effectively; able to challenge, negotiate and influence to achieve a desired goal/outcome

  • A good understanding of the complete product development process preferably for aerospace products is desirable
  • Practical experience of Antenna testing on near and far field ranges
  • Competent practical experience in the use of RF test equipment such as VNAs/PNAs, spectrum analysers, signal generators, power meters, anechoic chamber
  • Experience of testing and troubleshooting of RF systems above 6GHz.
  • The ability to analyse the trade‚Äźoffs between performance, manufacturability, cost and user experience
