Analogue/RF Hardware Engineer

We have an exciting opportunity for a bright, passionate and innovative Analogue/RF Hardware Engineer to complement the existing design team playing a significant part in the development of a novel phased array antenna system for the aerospace markets. The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic London-based technology company developing and delivering complex and innovative products into the aerospace, maritime and land mobile industries.

Your role will be required to design the hardware sub-assemblies for the next generation of Ku/Ka multi-gigahertz RF Antenna Boards, specifically RF, Analogue and mixed signal boards, whilst contributing to the wider system architecture. You will be a part of a multidisciplinary team working with ASIC, Antenna, Mechanical, Manufacturing and Product Engineers across a range of technologies.

Technical responsibilities

  • As a member of the hardware development team, your role will be to design, verify, commission and productise board-level hardware designs for Hanwha’s Phased Array Antenna products.
  • You will strengthen the existing team with a background in Analogue and RF electronic circuit design to arrive at a level of excellence for product development and cost-effective designs.
  • To take ownership of hardware designs from requirements, hardware specifications, schematic entry though to PCB layout, commissioning, verification and supporting integration into platforms.
  • Perform design calculations and RF/Analogue simulations using industry standard tools in order to estimate performance, identify high-risk areas and ensure reliable designs.
  • Conduct hardware design reviews when appropriate to ensure quality designs.
  • Collaborate with the other members of the hardware, software, systems and mechanical teams to ensure effective support of the existing development programmes and Antenna Systems.
  • Support product design, hardware integration, validation and handover to production with other Engineering team members.
  • Ensure the products are designed for EMC, Environmental and other regulatory approvals and meet the requirements for volume manufacturing (DFT/DFM).

  • Contribute to the company’s long-term goals by delivering right first-time hardware designs.
  • Take responsibility for delivery of quality hardware designs to tight timescales, contributing to planning sessions, design review and written reports when required.
  • Strongly self-motivated, creative and able to take ownership of problems and finding solutions.

Essential qualifications and skills

  • A good first or upper 2nd Class degree (BEng/MEng) in Electronic/Electrical Engineering from a leading University.
  • At least 3 years’ experience of complex high-frequency, low noise Analogue and RF circuit design in the data communications or aerospace industries in a product development environment.
  • Strong technical knowledge of Analogue and RF circuit design techniques from the specification, design and verification phases through to systems integration and manufacture.
  • Be able to demonstrate experience in the design and characterisation of mixed-signal (Analogue/Digital/RF) multi-layer PCB designs and the associated debug and integration issues.
  • Design knowledge, analysis and characterisation of circuits and systems involving PLLs, frequency synthesizers, NCOs, Modulators, De-Modulators, PAs, RF chains, filters, splitters/combiners and integrating them into board-level designs. Understanding of key performance parameters.
  • Experienced in high-speed impedance-controlled layouts for RF and mixed signal PCBs, defining stackups and associated constraints. Solid knowledge of high-speed layout techniques.
  • Competent with schematic capture tools, specifically Altium Designer and simulation tools such as TI-SPICE, HSPICE for analogue simulations. Knowledge of HFSS/ADS would be a bonus.
  • Ability to liaise with and manage PCB layout engineers, fabricators and assembly houses.
  • Knowledge of developing and implementing test plans and conducting practical measurements for the testing and evaluation of RF and mixed signal based designs.
  • Competent practical experience in the use of test equipment such as scopes, spectrum analysers, PNAs, VNAs, signal generators, power meters.
  • Creative, accurate, methodical with good problem-solving abilities. The ability to analyse the trade‐offs between performance, manufacturability, cost and user experience.
  • Good practical skills in electronics, soldering and mechanical assembly skills.

Desirable

  • A good understanding of the complete product development process preferably for high-reliability environments, namely aerospace, marine or automotive products.
  • Knowledge of L-Band Modem circuit design would be a distinct advantage.
  • Knowledge of the product approvals process to meet CE, EN and the relevant product approvals (emissions, susceptibility, environmental) for the Aero (DO-160G) and marine markets.
  • Conversant with product design for EMC. DFM/DFT for volume manufacture.
